24 port gigabit switches?

I just walked into a position chalk-full of bad hardware.. Namely : DELL.. it's a 99% dell shop, but it's a new venture and we have a bit of room to fix mistakes.. The problem I'm trying to get aroudn is price points. We bought 8 of these worthless powerconnect 5524s for $1300 a pop.. I'm trying to ifnd something that, well, works, and isn't more than 3-4x as much.. Does anybody have any recommendations?

The only nice thing about these dells, beyond the price, is the lawst 4 ports can either gigabit copper, or fibre sfp gbics..

    Dude,

I'm no switch or giga guru, but from what all my friends tell me, Cisco is the only way to go.

If you want a price break, take a look at www.computergiants.com, they sell name-brand stuff at much cheaper than retail pricing. Most of their wares are new, boxed, but there are refurbs in the mix. So, watch the descriptions and call if you're not sure.

    Best of luck!

I know most folks cringe at the price of Cisco gear, but... you get what you pay for. I've used all kinds of gear... Juniper, Foundry, Cabletron, Bay/Nortel, etc. Cisco rules them all. They have market share for a reason...

You can get decent prices if you shop around... and even used gear (make sure it's not an 'end of life' product) is doable as long as you cover it under SmartNet.
